What is Prayer?
For today’s time, prayer is understood to be a personalized act where every individual in their own manner tries to engage with any activity of their choice in a focused and calm environment. With this understanding, a place for prayer was designed to be a place where people forget the sense of time (achieved through shadowless light from the hidden clerestory and interiority) to focus on their act of prayer.
Through personal experience from the temples and mosques, the journey to find the place for prayer is understood to be as important as the place for prayer itself, as it prepares the mental space for the act of prayer. Hence, the promenade through a wide long ramp, with the view of the sculptural pyramid symbolizes the journey to the inner most core, where the space is designed to be sacred sanctum with ephemeral light from the punctures made in the solid pyramidal roof, that makes one feel the presence of the starry sky above them. The building tries to respond to it’s context - Kochrab Gandhi Ashram - through it’s juxtaposition and usage of simple compositions of the built form. The project stands as a result of strong conceptual thinking, through iterative exploration of form, scale, geometry, and light to translate the ideological stance into a spatial experience.
